CSA Z248-17 inspection schedule
Tower cranes in BC must meet CSA Z248 (OHSR 14.2(6)), be inspected and maintained by a qualified person (14.13), and have records kept (14.14, 4.9). This loads Clause 6 of Z248-17 — the daily operator and rigger checks, weekly, monthly and annual inspections, and the two crane logs — against one machine, each item citing its clause.
Numbers still come from the machine, not the standard. Z248 says what to inspect and how often. It does not give you the brake gap, the torque figure or the wear limit — those are in the manufacturer's manual for that model, which is why there are two schedules. Special inspections (6.4.8) are not on any calendar: after shock loading, electrical contact, an incident, repairs, alterations or a prolonged shutdown, an engineer sets the procedure and verifies it.

Straight out of the ZOOMLION manual for that machine. These are the crane's own requirements and they sit alongside the CSA ones rather than replacing them.
Pick the right model. These machines are not interchangeable: the hoist brake shoe clearance is 70 ± 2 mm on the R275-12RB and 20 ± 2 mm on the RL250-16RB, and the gearbox oil falls at 2000 hours on one and 7500 hours or five years on the other. Loading the wrong sheet puts the wrong figure on a brake.

Typing twenty dates in by hand is how this gets abandoned on the first afternoon. This puts the dates every tower crane in BC has against a machine, with the right repeat already set — then you just correct the dates you know and delete any that do not apply. Nothing is guessed: every date comes in blank until you fill it, so it cannot tell you something is current when it is not.
Recertification — twelve months from the day it went up
A tower crane standing on a site has to be recertified within twelve months of being erected — the structure tested and an engineer’s certificate issued (OHSR 14.77(2)). The clock starts the day the crane went up, not the day you bought it, so the only thing needed here is that date. Put it in and the countdown appears in Expiries alongside the other certificates, and on the morning summary when it gets close.
High-angle rescue — who gets somebody down off the crane
If somebody ends up hanging in a harness up the mast, a rescue has to already be arranged — not worked out on the day (OHSR 4.13). In BC that means asking the local fire department to come and look at the crane, through BC Construction Safety Alliance’s THARRP portal at tharrp.bccsa-services.ca, per BCCSA’s current process.
Tap Copy the request and paste it into the portal. When they confirm they can reach a worker up there, tap Rescue confirmed and put the date in. Ask again after the crane climbs — a confirmation for a crane 40 metres shorter is not a confirmation.
What the program measures itself against
Counting things says what happened. An objective says what good looks like. These are the five from the safety manual, answered from what is already in this office — nothing to fill in. Where the answer is not kept in here, it says so rather than guessing.
Actions — what has to be fixed, and by when
Anything an inspection, a meeting, a review or an incident throws up goes here with a name and a date against it, and stays here until somebody says it is done. An action with no owner and no date is a wish.
What goes on the calendar
Pressing the button at the top puts the safety program's own dates on the same calendar as everything else, so they turn up on Today and in the morning summary like any other job. Nothing is invented: each one is a thing the written program already says QnQ does, and each says where it comes from. They repeat on their own once you mark them done, and the ones that need a note ask you for one line about what happened.
It is safe to press twice. Anything already on the calendar is left alone — only what is missing gets added.
What this is, and what happens after they send it back
The riskiest work on your cranes is not done by your hands. The crews that put them up, climb them and take them down are hired, not employed — and so is the mobile crane on erection day, the electrician, the testing body and the engineer. You pick those companies. You cannot supervise their workers. Picking them is the control.
The form asks them for five things: that they are registered with WorkSafeBC and paying their premiums, that they are insured, that their people are trained on the actual crane they will be standing on, that somebody can get a worker down off that crane, and their signature agreeing to work to your written procedures.
When it comes back you read it and press one of three buttons. Engage them, Engage with conditions, or Not yet with a line saying what is still missing. Whichever you press, your name and the date go on it — that is the record, and it is what an officer asks for after something goes wrong on a crane.
A year later it asks again. Twelve months from the day you accepted somebody, this screen starts counting down to their refresh. Nothing is typed in twice: it is worked out from the day you decided, the same way the recertification clock is worked out from the day a crane went up.
Nothing here is sent to anybody automatically. A link only goes when you press Send the pre-qualification, and the screen tells you honestly whether the email actually left.
